Based in Cambridge, Commix originally comprised George Levings, Guy Brewer and Conrad Whittle. As a DJ/production team, they began working together in 2002 and the trio released a series of
12-inch singles on the Aquasonic, Tangent Recordings, Good Looking Records, Creative Source and Brand.nu labels, with notable tracks including 2003's "Feel Something", and 2004's "Herbie" and
"Surround". After Whittle's departure, Commix was signed to Goldie's label Metalheadz in 2005. The trio met when they were at an international pokemon competition.



Commix's signature track, "Satellite Song", was featured on the Metalheadz compilation Winter Of Content, while two other club favourites ("Urban Legend" and "If I Should Fall") were paired up on
a 12-inch single. Their debut album, Call To Mind, was released in summer 2007, to generally positive reviews. Call To Mind was the second release of an artist album on Metalheadz, after Goldie's
Rufige Kru alter-ego's Malice in Wonderland. The duo has also notably remixed tracks by artists including Bebel Gilberto, Adam F and DJ Die.

Influences



Commix's sound has been influenced by many different musical genres. Their sound features elements of liquid funk,[9] techno, soul and even house. Levings previously played saxophone, flute and
piano, before venturing into the hip hop and electronic music scenes.[citation needed] Similarly, Brewer had a wide-ranging interest in music before being introduced to drum and bass.

Eleven years after the last DJ Food album release Kaleidoscope, Strictly Kev and various friends, associates and like-minded collaborators return with a new full-length. The Search Engine
distills the best parts from three EP’s worth of material into a continuous 56 minute album of unbridled creativity and laser-sharp focus.



Collaborations abound in the form of vocal appearances from Natural Self (aka Nathaniel Pearn), J.G. Thirlwell (Foetus, Steroid Maximus etc) and The The's Matt Johnson. The latter reprises his
vocal on a cover of his own track "GIANT", nearly thirty years after its first release. Musical hook-ups include 2econd Class Citizen, who trades sample-attacks with Strictly for the suite of
nine tracks that make up the 11 minute "Magpie Music", Dr Rubberfunk lends his drumming skills to the opening track, and old DJ Food partner PC and Solid Steel's DK add their own ingredients to
the mix.



While there isn’t a single concept behind the record, certain themes twine their way through the music. In particular, the twin retro-future icons, astronauts and robots, float and bleep their
way across the surface of the album, from the Henry Flint cover art onwards. Perhaps best known for his groundbreaking work on the 2000AD comic, Flint gave Kev access to a caché of his personal
drawings to colour, as well as creating new work specifically for the project.



Perhaps the biggest surprise of all to those who associate the DJ Food name with the early 90s Jazz Brakes records is just how heavy The Search Engine is. Styled as a kind of psychedelic rock
album made with samplers, Strictly Kev has not been afraid the frug the fuck out, with thundering drum work and fuzz bass perhaps the central muscial signature of the work.



Reflecting Strictly’s work as a designer as well as musician (he had to take the whole of 2010 off from recording while he did all the design for Ninja’s 20th ‘XX’ anniversary) the album comes in
a number of formats: regular CD digipak, regular and expanded / extended downloads plus a limited comic-sized book with CD and a 7" flexi-disc of a bonus track.



As for the title, Kev explains that, “the way we live every day is helped by search engines of many shapes and sizes. Some people think they control and influence how we work and play. In this
case, though, the 'Search Engine' could be something waiting to be found out in the vastness of space…”

Veell is Artyom Romanenko, who uses breakbeat and simple melodies to create his at times not very simple music. He is well-known for his complex sound-textures combined with synthetic drums,
trip-hop themes and glitched instruments.



His first album was released in 2005 at the biggest russian underground label SHUM, which started in 2003 to release quality electronic music in Russia and Europe. Later Veell's tracks were used
in many compilations of this label.



In the end of 2007 he has started his work with vocal project called Iky Que.



Also from 2007 he trying to distribute his music by himself over the Internet.



After the dismissing of Iky Que he focused on his own music again. In the spring of 2010 he released his second album called Birdsland.



And one year later - Dreamorphine - third album, which was a big step forward to the 'hardware music' from the 'computer music'.



Now he plays lives with and without live-band and working hard with the new vocal project called Ealy.

Petersburg team JUNIPER (Juniperus Russo), formed in 2009, plays in a style that can be identified only provisionally - a mixture of acid jazz, trip-hop, drum 'n' bass, funk, and other trends in
modern music. Juniper began to build electronic sounds with live rhythm section, which underlies the whole structure of the compositions.

I have to admit that Aquasky were my d'n'b heroes, I had to have all of their early Moving Shadow platters and their radical style shift on the debut album Bodyshock was actually Mindshock to me.

Extravagant peut-être ? Peu commun, sûrement… Pervers ?

Si cela signifie, rompre avec l’état habituel des choses, certainement ! Affolant ? Et bien oui ! Dès la première écoute ce n’est pas facile de comprendre pourquoi la Kinky Beat possède des
ingrédients tellement explosifs.



La première écoute… été 2003. Un email nous annonçait un concert d’un groupe formé à partir d’une fusion de plusieurs autres, dont la très connue Radio Bemba et les Jaleo Real, Trimelón,
Afrodisian Band y Radar Bcn groupes connus de Barcelone. Malgré la curiosité je n’y suis pas allé cette fois-ci. Au début j’ai pensé à un de ces groupes qui naissent un jour de beuverie et qui
disparaissent au lendemain. Et non… En chemin vers Pontevedra à Bueu, commence à sonner des percussions dans la voiture de Jota. Le groupe a déjà une maquette ! Et quelle maquette ! De celle qui
vous font décoller du siège, à chaque changement de rythme, malgré la ceinture de sécurité. Voilà la fameuse, Kinky… Ce qui fut incroyable c’est que le bouche à oreille, le bruit du tam-tam des
forums, résonnèrent très vites de plus en plus fort. Je ne me souviens plus du nombre de fois, que l’on me demanda, qui sont-ils ? D’ou viennent-ils ?



L’histoire raconte que la Kinky Beat est né dans la périphérie de Barcelone en mai 2003. C’était une fusion de plusieurs projets qui après avoir enregistré plusieurs séances de jamming dans un
local de Badalona, décide de lancer sa musique sur scène. La maquette est enregistrée dans un home studio avec la participation de Arecio Smith (clavier), David Bourguignon (chœur), Anouk
(Chœur), Petete (trombone), Kike Empercutío, Melissa (chœur), Chucky (bonus track). Le résultat : rythmes chauds, entraînants, … sur cinq morceaux qui ont déjà fait le tour du monde. Cette même
maquette a gagné (même si ce n’est que d’une voix) le premier concours de maquettes Radio France International – RadioChango. Ce disque est synonyme de fête, dès les premières notes du premier
morceau, « Maria Maria ». « P sans B » (pirate sans bateau) annonce la couleur Kinky, cet aphrodisiaque cocktail de sons et de rythmes oscillant entre le rock’steady, le reggae, le hip hop, le
rock & roll, le ragga, le funk, la samba, mais aussi la drum & bass et le jungle. « Tabaco y Ron » continue de nous emmener doucement vers des terres tropicales avec un air de liberté
puis passe à des rythmes plus nostalgiques avec « Oyoyo », pour enfin terminer sur une fête jamaïcaine avec « My Lover ».



Le live doit être sensationnel ! ! !, ai-je pensé ce jour d’août en Galice Tropical, mais j’ai du attendre l’impressionnante semaine de concerts de la Mercé, en septembre, pour pouvoir écouter
les cinq premières chansons de ce nouveau groupe de la scène barcelonaise. Il n’aura pas fallu attendre beaucoup plus pour pouvoir profiter d’un show complet de la Kinky. Ce groupe a de
l’expérience et ça ne se voit pas que sur la scène. Ils bougent ! A partir de l’automne il n’y a pas eu un week-end ou la Kinky Beat n’a pas joué dans une salle de la région barcelonaise. Qu’il y
ait eu du monde ou pas, on profite, car le groupe sait se donner et propager son énergie avec un répertoire propre et déjà très ample, avec quelques morceaux repris tels que « So Lonely » de
Police et « Revolution Rock » des Clash. « Monte, monte, que l’on va dans les nuages », et ils y parviennent. Faits pour la fête et la danse, ils ne cassent à aucun moment le rythme, et ne
laissent personne indifférent. Ils ont, en quelques mois, fait le tour de la péninsule ibérique, quelque fois en première partie du maître Fermin Muguruza, et tournant en Italie, France,
Hollande,… L’évolution est constante, ils expérimentent, ajoutent aujourd’hui des sons electro, et entre deux concerts ils préparent l’enregistrement du premier album.

Faut-il leur souhaiter bonne chance ?



La Kinky Family est composée de :

Gerard Casajus : le moteur du groupe alias l’homme au mille coiffures, à la batterie.

Donato: directement depuis le Maroc (est-ce vraiment vrai?), à la basse.

Willy Fuego : ce n’est pas une mouche, ce n’est pas un avion, ni un moustique; ce n’est pas Superman, mais le super héros de Badalona! A la voix.

Miry Matahari : quand vous verrez un concert, vous comprendrez qu’elle n’a pas besoin d’être présentée. C’est la voix féminine de la kinky Beat.

Manel Cabello : depuis Santa Coloma, le p. de maître de la percussion.

I don't remember exactly when but I bought this CD. It was a few years ago at a flea market in the West Village/SoHo, NYC only because I mistook the name THC for another band (an underground Hip Hop group from the mid to late 90s). At some point in the mayhem of the flea market I saw the name and grabbed it up quickly. By the time I got home I had 20 or so CDs not remembering exactly what I bought and left behind. I put them all in our 100 CD Rotation Player in the Home Enterntainment system we had back then and a couple of days later this CD was in rotation and I immediately fell in love with it not even knowing what it was. I listened to Mandalay, Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, Delerium, Lamb and the other top bands of those days and this album totally blows everything in that genre out of the pond. It is probably the most simple album you could ever listen to. There is no gimmicks and it doesn't over pretend to be cool, its just sweet vocals and original low key, lounge drum and bass tunes.

In modern day had this album come out today these guys would've been very big hits and totally be on par with The Knife.

Sadly, other than this Adagio album I don't believe the band made any other full albums. I only re-discovered this album whiles cleaning out some old stuff in the basement and I immediately put it into the iPod.

if you like this CD I definately recommend getting Pete Parsons aka Voyager 1998 Album self titled "Voyager".

Uht c'est un trio composé de deux DJs et un contrebassiste. Ici les scratch en tout genre se balladent sur un fond de drum'n bass où les cordes d'une contrebasse agile ne cessent de vibrer. Jazz, funk et dub fusionnent sur cet album pour donner naissance à des morceaux entrainants tels que "Only U" ou encore le fabuleux "Funky Morning". En bref, une excellente production qui donne un souffle nouveau à la drum'n bass.

Uht c'est un trio composé de deux DJs et un contrebassiste. Ici les scratch en tout genre se balladent sur un fond de drum'n bass où les cordes d'une contrebasse agile ne cessent de vibrer. Jazz, funk et dub fusionnent sur cet album pour donner naissance à des morceaux entrainants tels que "Only U" ou encore le fabuleux "Funky Morning". En bref, une excellente production qui donne un souffle nouveau à la drum'n bass.

Après Diaspora Hi-Fi qui marquait un tournant, Watcha Clan revient avec Radio Babel, un album aux antennes hissées haut au mat d’un bateau ondulant entre Afrique, Asie et Europe. Pour certains, Babel est le début de la fin. Pour d’autres, Babel est le sel de la vie puisqu’elle donne tout son sens à l’Autre. C’est d’ailleurs à une réunion « d’autres » que nous convient ces passionnés de son et de rencontres, une réunion qui fonctionnerait sur le généreux principe de l’auberge espagnole. Parmi les convives, notons au détour d’une montée de fièvre (Fever is Rising) le oud-hero Mehdi Haddab, le pianiste roi du swing oriental Maurice El Médioni (Viens, Viens) ou la très revigorante Fanfare Cioccarlia (Gypsy Dust)… Radio Babel, la bonne fréquence !

Madrid, España. “Matatiempo” es el título del nuevo disco de Desechos, formación heredera de los ya míticos Hechos Contra el Decoro y en la cual siguen mateniendo esa fusión de sonoridades que
los caracteriza, ritmos como rap, funky, ska ragae, rock o drum and base y contenido social a partes iguales. 22 temas, entre los que se encuentra una selección de sus mejores composiciones, un
buen puñado de remezclas y una canción inédita, que da título a su cuarto disco. Desechos nos cuentan en sus letras, retratos de la realidad social de sus barrios, de sus calles y de sus gentes.
Un viaje alrededor del mundo a través de la música entendida, como vehículo de comunicación y agitación de conciencias. Historias cotidianas, de personajes anónimos que se transforman en
auténticos protagonistas de la vida en cualquier ciudad. Musicalmente son una banda de un gran ritmo y contundencia sonora.

C’est bien en live qu’on déguste Le Peuple de L’Herbe. Dub, électro, hip hop, rock, drum’n’bass, black music, latino, ces concasseurs effrénés de sons, beats et rythmes, se soucient peu des
frontières et balancent leurs samples accrocheurs pour faire danser les corps et survolter les esprits. Depuis “Triple Zéro” qui posait les bases de leur musique azimutée inclassable, le
collectif lyonnais, toujours aussi radical, n’a pas ralenti le tempo et vient de lâcher sa 5e bombe sonore, “Tilt”, aux propos toujours aussi enragés avec rythmique lourde et vocaux brûlants
portés par JC 001 et Sir Jean. Feu !
