Lorsque les Troublemakers sont arrivés en 2001 avec "doubts & convictions", ils ont fait un bien fou à la scène électro française, alors dominée par l'insupportable "french touch". Le disque n'était pas parfait, mais leur électro cinématographique contenait des grands moments, comme le fameux "get misunderstood" et son speach de Jean Pierre Léaud. Trois ans plus tard, ils enfoncent le clou avec "express way", conçu comme une bande originale de film (le disque était d'ailleurs accompagné d'un dvd contenant un moyen métrage méttant en image la partie audio) et mêlait avec brio électro, jazz, soul, funk et hip hop. Après cette réussite incontestable, plus de nouvelles du duo marseillais.
C'est donc avec une grande curiosité que je me suis lancé dans l'écoute du premier album solo de la moitié du groupe, Dj Oil. "Black Notes" reprend les choses là où le groupe s'était arrêté 8 ans plus tôt. Ce disque est en effet la suite logique de "express way"; les influences sont clairement les mêmes et on retrouve une partie des invités qui l'illuminait (Gift Of Gab des Blackalicious et la flûte de Magic Malik). Autre point commun, "black notes" s'écoute également comme une bande originale. Le savoir faire du marseillais est encore une fois plus qu'évidente, qu'il s'aventure du côté du hip hop ("black notes"), de la house ("buddy"), de l'électro downtempo ("ingrid tapes"), du spoken words à la Gil Scott-Heron des débuts (it's a teenage thang") ou de l'afro électro ("mind your step", P.O. box"). Bref, un beau retour en force de cet ex Troublemakers avec un disque totalement maîtrisé !

Eleven years after the last DJ Food album release Kaleidoscope, Strictly Kev and various friends, associates and like-minded collaborators return with a new full-length. The Search Engine
distills the best parts from three EP’s worth of material into a continuous 56 minute album of unbridled creativity and laser-sharp focus.
Collaborations abound in the form of vocal appearances from Natural Self (aka Nathaniel Pearn), J.G. Thirlwell (Foetus, Steroid Maximus etc) and The The's Matt Johnson. The latter reprises his
vocal on a cover of his own track "GIANT", nearly thirty years after its first release. Musical hook-ups include 2econd Class Citizen, who trades sample-attacks with Strictly for the suite of
nine tracks that make up the 11 minute "Magpie Music", Dr Rubberfunk lends his drumming skills to the opening track, and old DJ Food partner PC and Solid Steel's DK add their own ingredients to
the mix.
While there isn’t a single concept behind the record, certain themes twine their way through the music. In particular, the twin retro-future icons, astronauts and robots, float and bleep their
way across the surface of the album, from the Henry Flint cover art onwards. Perhaps best known for his groundbreaking work on the 2000AD comic, Flint gave Kev access to a caché of his personal
drawings to colour, as well as creating new work specifically for the project.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of all to those who associate the DJ Food name with the early 90s Jazz Brakes records is just how heavy The Search Engine is. Styled as a kind of psychedelic rock
album made with samplers, Strictly Kev has not been afraid the frug the fuck out, with thundering drum work and fuzz bass perhaps the central muscial signature of the work.
Reflecting Strictly’s work as a designer as well as musician (he had to take the whole of 2010 off from recording while he did all the design for Ninja’s 20th ‘XX’ anniversary) the album comes in
a number of formats: regular CD digipak, regular and expanded / extended downloads plus a limited comic-sized book with CD and a 7" flexi-disc of a bonus track.
As for the title, Kev explains that, “the way we live every day is helped by search engines of many shapes and sizes. Some people think they control and influence how we work and play. In this
case, though, the 'Search Engine' could be something waiting to be found out in the vastness of space…”

Simon Green was born and grew up in rural Hampshire, escaping to Brighton aged eighteen. There he fell into the jazz/hip hop/funk/soul scene centred around Rob Luis and nights like phonic:hoop.
An accomplished musician as a teenager, he began producing his own tracks, pushing at the template established in the sweaty little venues studding the Lanes.
Green’s first release came on Luis’ label, Tru Thoughts, when his track 'Terrapin' was included on the compilation 'When Shapes Join Together' in 1999. His debut album, 'Animal Magic' followed
the next year, completely self-produced and largely self-played, too. Hailed as one of the “new downtempo pioneers”, Green found himself attracting the attention of other labels and eventually
signed to Ninja Tune.
In 2003 he released his first album for the label, 'Dial ‘M’ For Monkey'. This was a time when Green was also focussing heavily on his DJing, playing banging dancefloor sets of hip hop, funk
and drum & bass up and down the country and across Europe, a period which reached its apogee with the release of the mix album 'Solid Steel: It Came From The Sea'.
'Days To Come' followed in 2006, Green opting for a lusher, more live sound than on his earlier records. To tie in with this musical development, he put together and rehearsed a live band that
could bring the music of his records to life. As a result he has moved from selling out the Luminaire to selling out Koko to selling out Kentish Town Forum and the Roundhouse and producing the
live DVD to prove it. 'Days To Come' also scooped the Gilles Peterson listnerer’s poll for Album of The Year. At the award ceremonies he met the talented UK soul singer Andreya Triana. Not only
did the friendship they struck up result in Andreya’s superb contributions to 'Black Sands' but Si has produced the whole of her solo debut, 'Lost Where I Belong'.
Over the last couple of years, Bonobo has become one of the premier artists on the Ninja Tune imprint and certainly one of the most listened to, with over 16 million plays recorded on LastFM.
His combination of superb live shows and studio wizardry means that he is now perfectly placed to push on into a yet bigger league. With 'Black Sands', Bonobo has made the record to achieve it.

Chez Ninja Tune, on s'est souvent laissé noyer avec amour dans les albums de DJ Vadim. Producteur de hip-hop instrumental, né en Russie mais vite exilé en Angleterre, Vadim est apparu au milieu
des années 90 avec une poignée de disques sortis en indépendant.
Parallèlement à ses activités de son propre label, Jazz Fudge, qui continue à éditer du hip-hop underground et abstrait, Vadim a développé une esthétique propre, avec une série d'albums pour
Ninja Tune, qui comportent tous dans leur titre le mot USSR . Ainsi, USSR Repertoire ou USSR: Life from the Other Side ont précédé l'actuel USSR: The Art of Listening.
Même s'il est moins ombrageux que ses précédents disques, The Art of Listening n'en est pas moins tout aussi vertigineux et rempli de strates sonores surprenantes. Vadim ne se contente pas
d'enchaîner les chansons formatées, il utilise au contraire ses nombreux invités vocaux (Gift Of Gab de Blackalicious ou les Français TTC) pour organiser son hip-hop d'une manière inédite.
Parfois, le disque ressemble à certains tubes de Pierre Henry : même sens du groove pop noyé sous un déluge de bruits concrets et sens très dramatique de la progression et de l'évolution
musicale.
Le morceau chanté par les trublions français TTC en est la plus jolie illustration : il commence par quelques scratches, qui bousculent la voix en anglais de Maurice Chevalier, rehaussés par des
accordéons montmartrois. Très vite, Vadim introduit les flows de TTC, qu'il fait résonner avec des samples vocaux et modifie à loisir le volume des voix. La polyphonie de TTC, drôle et ludique,
n'en devient que plus tarabustée et psychédélique, à la fois bouffonne et très musicale. Vadim procède de même avec la voix sauvage et brouillée de la chanteuse Yarah Bravo le temps de She Who Is
Tested et The Pacifist, deux morceaux doucement désossés, qui pourraient tout aussi bien être de la pop futuriste que du hip-hop vintage.
On retrouve bien là DJ Vadim, un type au talent complexe, capable de concevoir des disques qui se révèlent à chaque fois des fenêtres offrant une vue impressionniste d'un univers mental
hermétique et irréductible, loin des modes et des engouements passagers.
